This tools not only improved my sleep by shifting the focus of my thoughts, but they also helped me relax and stay asleep. Today, self-hypnosis is one of the tools I rely on whenever my mind needs help slowing down.

As an overthinker, bedtime used to feel like the loudest part of my day.

For years, the moment my head hit the pillow, every creative project, unresolved problem, and task for the next day would pop up in my mind.

The problem was that my mind didn’t know how to turn off. So, implementing a strict sleep hygiene helped me build the foundation, but the real change happened when I accessed my subconscious directly through hypnosis and instructed it how to relax and sleep deeper.

I used to go to bed and start overthinking: “what I did that day, what I have to do tomorrow, why did that person say that?…” The more I tried to stop my thoughts, the more awake I felt.

Why Overthinking Gets Worse at Night

Throughout the day, your attention is pulled in different directions: work, conversations, notifications, and responsibilities keep your brain occupied.

At night, those distractions disappear, so the mind finally has space to process everything it didn’t have time to process during the day. From a neuroscience perspective, this isn’t unusual. Research suggests that stress, anxiety, and mental overload increase cognitive arousal. In simple terms, your brain remains alert when it should be preparing for sleep. Elevated levels of cortisol, often called the stress hormone, can also interfere with your ability to fall asleep.

Trying to force yourself to sleep usually has the opposite effect because the brain interprets effort as a sign that it needs to stay engaged. That’s why the solution was as simple as to stop trying to fight my thoughts.

What Actually Helped Me Sleep Better

Improving my sleep was the combination of several habits that made the difference:

1. No Screens One Hour Before Bed

This was one of the hardest habits to build.

Phones, computers, and televisions emit blue light, which suppresses melatonin production. Melatonin is the hormone that helps regulate your sleep cycle.

At the same time, scrolling social media, answering emails, or watching videos keeps the brain mentally stimulated.

Less stimulation = less mental noise.

Extra tip: If you need to use your computer or phone in the evening, consider wearing red or orange blue light blocking glasses. They can help reduce exposure to blue wavelengths that affect melatonin production. You can buy them in Ruanova Health.

2. Breathwork

One of the fastest ways to tell your body it’s safe to relax is through your breath.

Slow breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, often called the “rest and digest” system.

When your exhale becomes longer than your inhale, your heart rate gradually slows down and your body begins shifting into a calmer state.

A few minutes of focused breathing before bed is usually enough. A simple breathwork technique I like is the coherent breathing. To try it, just inhale continuously for a count of 5, and exhale continuously for a count of 5. Do this for 5 minutes, and you can feel a shift in your body.

Extra tip: The Insight Timer app offers many excellent free breathwork sessions for relaxation and sleep.

3. Progressive Relaxation

Another technique I use is the progressive muscle relaxation. This meditation technique is very effective for quick relaxation and the best part is that it’s beginner friendly.

Just simply bring your attention to the top of your head, notice any sensation in the top of your head and on your next exhale release any tension. Then notice any sensations on your forehead, and with an exhale soften your forehead. Keep relaxing and releasing each part of your face, your cheeks, your jaw, your neck, shoulders, back, until the tips of your toes. Focus on each part of your body, and with every exhale let go of tension.

This simple shift helps redirect attention away from constant thinking.

4. Self-Hypnosis Audios

This was actually the part that help me see results.

Sometimes the mind needs help transitioning out of problem-solving mode. A guided self-hypnosis recording provides that transition, because it helps the subconscious learn what relaxation actually feels like.

So, instead of trying to silence my thoughts, I listened to self-hypnosis audios that gently redirected my attention toward calming suggestions, visualizations, and physical relaxation.

Over time, my brain began recognizing this as part of my bedtime routine.

Why Hypnosis Can Help With Sleep

Hypnosis is a state of focused attention and deep relaxation.

During hypnosis, the mind becomes more receptive to helpful suggestions while remaining fully aware of the experience.

Research suggests hypnosis may improve sleep quality for some people by reducing mental arousal, promoting relaxation, and supporting emotional regulation.

Many people find that hypnosis becomes a valuable tool alongside healthy sleep habits.

How I can help you

I create personalized self-hypnosis recordings designed around your specific goals, including improving sleep, reducing nighttime overthinking, and helping your mind transition into deep relaxation.
